Most consulting firms do not need an app, and we will say so before you spend anything. What a growing number of them do need is a piece of software that turns something the firm already does manually into a repeatable product: a diagnostic that a prospect completes and gets a real assessment from, a dashboard that replaces the monthly deck for a long-running engagement, or a tool that lets the firm serve clients below its usual mandate size without partner time. That is a different brief from an app, and it is usually a web application rather than something in an app store. The question worth answering first is whether software actually removes partner hours or just adds a maintenance obligation.
The consulting software question is really a question about where partner leverage breaks down, and it has three defensible answers. The first is the top of the funnel, where a diagnostic tool lets a prospect self-assess against your framework, generating a qualified conversation without consuming partner hours, and giving your business development a reason to make contact that is not a cold approach. The second is the bottom of the market, where firms turn away organisations that cannot afford a full mandate; a productised, software-delivered version of a core service addresses a segment that is currently pure lost revenue. The third is delivery efficiency within existing engagements, where recurring measurement, data collection and reporting consume analyst time that a tool can absorb. Outside those three, most ideas are solutions looking for problems. A branded app that displays your insight articles will be downloaded by your own staff and nobody else, since your buyers read on a laptop during working hours and will not install a consultancy's app. Note also that almost none of this needs to be a mobile app in the first place. Consulting buyers work on desktop, corporate device policies frequently restrict installation, and a web application avoids app store review, dual platform development and the update friction entirely. We recommend a mobile app only where there is a genuine field data collection requirement, offline use, or push-based workflow, which in professional services is uncommon.
